Needs assessment study (NAS) for the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)

This needs assessment study (NAS) was commissioned by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) that was in the process of applying on specialized degree award to the Commission for University Education (CUE). Part of the intention was to offer PhD and Post-Doctoral training in the field of Research for Human Health in four fields: Population Health, Bio surveillance & Epidemiology, Molecular Biological Sciences, Medical product development & evaluation and Health Systems and Preventive Sciences. The general focus of this needs assessment was to gauge demand for the proposed training programmes, to understand postgraduate training needs, service
gaps for the selected focus areas, to ascertain whether there is interest in the programmes, and the perceived importance of the suggested programmes.

  • Review the transcripts of the KIIs conducted and align them accordingly for analysis
  • Using NVIVO qualitative software, coded the data to generate information from the different sources
  • Summarized the preliminary findings and presented to the KEMRI team
  • Reviewed the draft report and included the qualitative findings
